Acne occurs when the hair follicles or ‘pores’ on the skin become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. This becomes the perfect place for bacteria, usually found on our face, to multiply causing red, pus-filled bumped known as pimples. Acne can vary in severity:-

MILD:- whiteheads or blackheads, that most of us get, at various times in our life. They are more of an annoyance to us, than debilitating.

MODERATE:- red inflamed pimples called papules and red pimples with a white centre called pustules.

SEVERE:- Nodules- which are painful pus-filled cysts or lumps which appear under the skin. This form of acne is the type to leave long lasting scarring.

Scarring occurs on our faces due to the deficit of collagen in the specific area. Once the acne has subsided, the affected area needs collagen to heal. If the collagen is not present in that area, then it tends to get scarred during the healing process, resulting in ice pick scars.

Common mistakes, when treating Acne

OVER SCRUBBING or OVER CLEANSING- Acne is NOT DIRT! Constantly scrubbing your face, will leave your skin feeling raw, red and more inflamed than before

POPPING or PICKING PIMPLES- will only prolong the healing time and increases your risk of scarring. You can spread the bacteria across the face, or push it in deeper leading to more swelling and redness.
